How Many Jobs Does a Data Center Create?

There is no single job count for every data center. In Virginia, industry representatives told JLARC that a typical 250,000-square-foot facility has about 50 full-time workers, roughly half of them contractors. Construction can involve many more people for a limited period. These figures describe different kinds of work and should be reported separately. Read the JLARC findings.

Which jobs are being counted?

| Construction workforce | Peak versus average headcount, project duration and local hiring. A job-year is a year of work, not necessarily one permanent role. |

Keep these measures separate: adding them can double-count people or mix temporary work with ongoing positions.
What does newer research say about local jobs?
Brookings revised its employment study on August 10, 2026. Its updated estimates imply roughly 100–200 jobs in a typical treated county, depending on facility type. The study compares places receiving facilities with places where announced projects were canceled. This is a local labor-market estimate, not a count of employees inside one building. Read the revised research and its limitations.
How to assess a proposed facility
Start with the operator's workforce plan. Ask for ongoing employee and contractor positions, construction timing, and the share of roles expected to be filled locally. Compare projects using the same definitions. Disclosed power capacity can help describe a facility's scale, but we do not convert our directory's megawatts into an assumed employment total.
